I’d actually seriously consider booting Ubuntu or some other nonMac OS X operating system to reformat the drive that way first, and then use Disk Utility to format the drive back to HFS+ and reinstall OS X. So clearly, something isn't working properly. If youre trying on a Mac using Disk Utility to erase a hard drive and it wont unmount.
